The institution traces its history to 1978, when the Imo State Government established it as the College of Technology, Owerri, initially operating at a provisional site within the premises of Government Technical College. It was later relocated to its permanent site in Nekede, where it developed into the institution now known as the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
