PTDF In-Country Scholarship 2026/2027
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has opened its 2026/27 In-Country Scholarship Scheme for qualified Nigerian students seeking undergraduate, Master’s and PhD opportunities in eligible programmes at Nigerian public universities.
The scholarship is designed to develop Nigerian human capacity in fields connected to the oil and gas industry, energy and related management areas. Unlike overseas PTDF scholarships, the In-Country Scholarship allows successful applicants to pursue their studies within Nigeria.
According to the official PTDF guidelines, applications are restricted to specific courses and public universities. The scheme is also highly competitive, with selection based on academic merit and equitable representation across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The requirements depend on whether the applicant is applying for the undergraduate, MSc or PhD category.

- University admission letter.
- Signed and stamped first-year academic transcript.

Is NIN Required?
Yes. A National Identification Number (NIN) is required before applying.
PTDF states that applicants must verify their NIN before proceeding with the scholarship application. The official portal currently also carries a notice concerning temporary NIMC server maintenance and explains what applicants who have already paid for verification should do when verification becomes available.
When Does the 2026 PTDF In-Country Scholarship Close?
The official PTDF guidelines state that applications for the 2026/27 In-Country Scholarship Scheme opened on Monday, April 27, 2026 and closed on Friday, June 5, 2026, giving applicants six weeks to submit their applications.
Therefore, applicants should not rely on websites advertising a different closing date unless PTDF itself publishes an extension or new announcement.
How to Apply for the PTDF In-Country Scholarship
Applications are submitted online through the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal.
The process generally involves creating an applicant account, entering the required personal and academic information, verifying the applicant’s details and uploading the required documents.
Applicants should:
- Visit the official PTDF Scholarship Management Portal.
- Create an applicant account.
- Verify the required personal information and NIN.
- Select the appropriate In-Country Scholarship category.
- Enter accurate academic and university information.
- Upload the required documents in the specified formats.
- Review the application carefully.
- Submit the application before the stated deadline.
PTDF provides application instructions through its scholarship portal, and applicants are advised to read the requirements before completing the form.
How PTDF Selects Scholarship Beneficiaries
Meeting the minimum requirements does not automatically guarantee a scholarship.
PTDF describes the scheme as competitive and merit-driven. For postgraduate applications, the selection process considers academic performance, full academic transcripts, professional qualifications, relevant publications and membership of professional bodies where applicable.
For PhD applicants, the viability of the proposed research is also considered.
MSc and undergraduate applicants must demonstrate why their proposed studies are important, while PhD candidates must show how their research relates to the oil and gas industry and its potential contribution to national development.
The Fund also states that selection takes equitable representation of Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT into account, except where a state does not have enough qualified candidates to fill its allocated places.
Important Things Applicants Should Know
There are several conditions that prospective applicants should take seriously.
First, part-time programmes are not considered under the scheme.
Second, anyone who has previously benefited from a PTDF scholarship cannot apply for the same or a lower degree category.
Third, people who are already beneficiaries of another scholarship should not apply.
Undergraduate applicants must already have completed their first-year examinations and be in 200 level.
Postgraduate applicants who are already in their final year are also not eligible under the stated guidelines.
Applicants should also be careful about unofficial agents claiming that they can secure PTDF scholarship slots. PTDF has previously warned that it does not sell or allocate scholarship slots to individuals or third parties.
Final Advice for Applicants
The PTDF In-Country Scholarship is a competitive opportunity for Nigerian students pursuing selected programmes at public universities. The most important step is to confirm your category, university, course and academic qualifications before starting the application.
Students should also make sure their transcripts, admission documents, examination results and other supporting documents are clear and consistent. A strong personal statement should directly explain the applicant’s academic goals, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry and the expected benefit to Nigeria.
Most importantly, applicants should use only the official PTDF scholarship platform and avoid people requesting money in exchange for guaranteed selection.
